If Hotel Bristol was the most luxurious place to stay, Hotel Europejski was the place to see and be seen, diplomatic parties, etc. The building was reduced to a shell during the Polish uprising in 1944, rebuilt in 1949, and used as the Ministry of Transport offices from 1951-54. It reopened as a hotel under the state tourist company, Orbis, in 1959. In 1993, the original owners of the hotel, Hotel Europejski Spólka Akcyjna (HESA), sued Orbis for ownership, and won, after a 12 year legal battle.
